Make the taskbar on the bottom not at the top

The default position of the lxqt taskbar on the bottom not top, preferable to have the same for ks/whonix.

Worth remembering the original reason for putting the panel at the top:

LXQt support the panel at the top:

Is there any testing ISO Images for the LXQt Kicksecure 18 switch with Wayland?

You can try it from here.

The reason i said it should be at the bottom by default because thats the lxqt-debian default and all distros with lxqt (i have tested). KS meant to be working on the hardware directly not in VMs. Also new users we expect some of them will come from windows or mac which their taskbars are on the bottom not top..

For Whonix since its meant to be for VMs might be reasonable, but not for KS.

How about…?

  • VM images: Taskbar at the top by default.
  • ISO / hardware: Taskbar at the bottom by default.

Not officially announced. Developer only testing so far. → Follow Kicksecure Developments

looks good if it can happen.

I personally would prefer not doing this. The taskbar at the top has been part of the core UX of both Whonix and Kicksecure for quite a while, and having the two projects be mostly functionality equivalent from a UX standpoint is valuable IMO since it means users who use one automatically are used to how to use the other. I don’t particularly like the idea of moving the taskbar to the bottom, but if we were to do it, I’d want it done to both Whonix and Kicksecure in tandem. Making it so that Kicksecure uses the panel at the top in VMs but not on physical hardware would be even worse since now users who are used to using Kicksecure in a VM will boot it on physical hardware and get confused.

I don’t think “everyone else does it like this” really is a good argument for “we should do it like this too”. Arguably having Kicksecure “feel” different than Windows or Mac is a good thing since it can help a user break away from the mindset of how they use Windows (which is probably shockingly insecure or at least inadvisable) and get used to using a new tool in a new way. Having the taskbar at the top is also arguably good because window titlebars are at the top, thus everything needed for window management (opening new apps, moving windows, switching windows, quick-launching apps, etc.) is at the top of the screen and easy to reach. Finally, if we want to use the “what everyone else does” argument, Raspberry Pi OS puts the taskbar at the top. MacOS doesn’t put the application dock at the top but it does put the application menu and system tray there. GNOME puts everything at the top by default too.

For me top or bottom is just a superficial thing as long as it has nothing to do with security/privacy. I said my reasoning of why i said lets make it top but whatever choice gonna be made i dont have problem with it.
