USER login - Insufficient Privileges

After a clean installation of Kicksecure 17.3.8.7 (ISO) on my hard drive, when I select PERSISTENT USER or LIVE USER from the bootloader menu, I get the following message before logging in:

I can only log in to SYSMAINT. What could be the problem?

There are a couple of ways you can run into this, both of them should only be possible if you’ve disabled login for either the user or sysmaint accounts.

  • If you’re booted into a sysmaint session, but try to login as account user, you will get this screen by design. Either log in as sysmaint to do system maintenance, or reboot the system into a persistent user session.
  • If you’re booted into a persistent user session, and are seeing this when trying to log into account user, LightDM has gotten desktop environments mixed up. To resolve this, click the wrench icon in the upper-right hand corner of the screen (near the clock), and select “Xfce Session” from the list of available desktops. Then log in as user.

If you’re seeing this screen appear automatically on boot, just click “OK” to drop back to a login screen, then follow the instructions in the second bullet point.
